I have to write about this as it really irritates me. Windows 7 is very cool, however if you want to extract files, it takes a long time. Here is an example.

We are extracting a zip file of oscommerce. This is the contents of the file.

image

We extracted it via Windows 7 compressed folders application. This took an incredible
image
7 Mins and 3 Secs.

So we tried our one of favourite free pieces of software called 7-Zip on the same zip file and it took.

image

Now I can understand that some programs work faster than others and that some computers run things better than others, I also understand that Windows 7 checks all the files before extracting and checks how much space is left on the HDD, but this difference in time is ridiculous.

So our whole company has set our zip file extensions to open by default with 7-Zip. And this is how you do it.

image

Right click on any zip file and chose the open with and then Choose default program.

Then select 7-Zip, if it is not there, please make sure that it is installed from http://www.7-zip.org/
Also it might be under Other programs, expand that and check. Then press OK.

If it has worked correctly then your zip files should look like this:

Hope that helps.

PS, Windows 7 Developers, you have billions of $ for development, please try and at least compete with the free programs out there.

Update: Was just asked to post my performance for Windows 7
