Update 1 Mar 2011 : Please see a complete ADSL speed test here : http://outsourcehouse.co.za/afrihost-vs-gamco-vs-mweb-vs-openweb-uncapped-adsl-south-africa/

So we are often asked our opinion at Outsource House about different things. Normally it has to be said that it normally revolves around technology.

I have heard a number of complaints about MWeb uncapped ADSL when it first came out, but those have seemed to quieten down. Now the best way is to test it ourselves.

So we have been running it for a bit and these are our feelings.

1 . Normally I find dealing with MWeb, quite painful, they are not that helpful and normally pass me around the telephone exchange faster than I can keep up. But the sign up was fairly painless. Look that did send me a form to fill in, rather than just doing everything on the phone, but that was even fine as the sales person was friendly and that goes far in my books.

2. The ADSL account was activated in under 30 minutes.

3. The speed? Well here is a screenshot of http://speedtest.net/ This test was done at 9am on a Wednesday. Our Telkom line is a 4mb line.

Now I don’t think that this is the whole story. Here is a screenshot of a download of iTunes from Apple, so this is an international site. I am using Flashget 3.3 to download as it uses more speed than anything I have used before.

Mweb Uncapped ADSL downloading

It downloads iTunes @ round 329kb/s, so it should download the file in about 4mins. not bad for a 72mb file.

If you have a premium DSTV subscription then you can also go here : http://ondemand.dstv.com and sign up so that you can download movies and videos from DSTV on Demand. I haven’t managed to get it working yet. But maybe they are having some problems.

If you would like to get the MWeb Uncapped ADSL, go here : http://www.mweb.co.za/adsl/

Under the Fastest 4096kbps you would be able to have uncapped ADSL for R899 or R539 per month for Shaped 4mb speed. Not bad at all.

I hope that helps.
